The Network

ALBA represents a global diverse network of individual neuroscientists who are involved in research, education, communication and advocacy, and are committed to supporting and advocating for actions and policies that foster diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in brain sciences across the globe. We currently have 1890 individual members from 91 countries.

I joined ALBA because :
As scientists who believe in the powers of interdisciplinary research and the diversity of ideas, I am convinced that promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential for our ability to advance neuroscience and our quests to understand the complexity of the brain and tackle brain disorders.

To achieve this goal, we need to do more to create the space, forums, and platforms for all members of our global neuroscience community to share their work and ideas, to challenge conventional wisdom, to connect with other neuroscientists, and to contribute to shaping the field.
We also must work together to ensure that the leadership of neuroscience organizations, lists of speakers in future conferences, and memberships in influential committees and boards reflect the true diversity of our global neuroscience community.

This is precisely what ALBA network is trying to accomplish, and I am happy to be able to contribute to advancing its mission and strategic objectives.

I joined ALBA because :
I am a white woman married to an Afro-Carribean man. We have an adopted bi-racial daughter and are part of a blended family with her 4 other sisters, their adoptive parents, and her birth mom. I was raised by a linguist mother who surrounded me with individuals from all walks of life and from various cultures. I have always cared about diversity and been aware of multi-cultural issues. However, marrying and adopting into a blended, multi-cultural (race, country, faith) family to realize the importance of MY direct action. I have always thought that there was not much for me to teach in the Neuroscience classroom about diversity. Now, I realize how wrong, and lazy, this assumption was. I am now committed to integrating these issues into my teaching and research mentoring at my institution, a Primarily White, and Undergraduate, Institution.

As a Latinamerican scientist and professor, I have found much bias to work in the neuroscience field, I'm convinced that we should reduce the differences and share our experience.

I am passionate about working toward improving representation of women and underrepresented groups in science. I have been involved in addressing this at the undergrad, grad, postdoc and faculty levels. I am very keen to expand my involvement globally and working with ALBA will bring exciting opportunities. Also I should mention that I have dual citizenship UK and USA, and have many connections in europe. I am the past president of SfN and so am also keen to foster a closer collaboration between SfN and ALBA.

I am aware of how fortunate I am to have a career as a neuroscientist, and of how many more obstacles others have had to contend with. I want others to have fair opportunities and for structural discriminations to be removed; history shows us that this progress can happen but won’t do so on its own.
